When it comes to Heartworm, prevention is key!

Is your pet protected?Heartworm is a parasite that travels through the bloodstream and settles in your pet’s heart. It is as easy to contract as being bitten by one infected mosquito. Some of the symptoms include coughing and shortness of breath. The treatment for a pet infected with Heartworm varies depending on the stage and growth of the parasite. A simple blood test is enough to detect the condition, but further tests might be needed to determine the scope of the disease. Thankfully, it is fairly simple to avoid this condition all together. There are a variety of products that are highly effective in the prevention of Heartworm disease. These usually are given monthly either by mouth or topically, and tend to be species specific. Please consult your veterinarian for the Heartworm preventative that best suits your pet’s needs. And remember, as it is usually the case, it is much easier to prevent heartworm than to cure it!
